While the first team won the Gala Sevens after disposing of the hosts in the semis and defeating Watsonsians in the final on Saturday, the club’s youth side, Melrose Wasps, won the Kelso Quins 7s - the day after defeating Jed Thistle in a play off at Philiphaugh, Selkirk, to win the Borders Semi-Junior League.

And, with the grand stands in place, the stage is now set for the 124th Melrose Sevens - the birthplace of Sevens and the oldest rugby sevens tournament in the world - at the Greenyards on Saturday, April 12, with the first tie kicking off at 11.30am.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph after the Gala Sevens on Saturday, Dalgetty said: “We’re delighted.

“The first tournament is always very difficult, we were very slow to start, the first couple of ties weren’t too hot. But we played really well against Gala in the semi-final and we played well in the final.

“Unfortunately, we picked up a couple of injuies (Graeme Dodds and Damien Hoyland) but it’s been a great weekend for the club - the Wasps won the Semi-Junior League last night, and they won Kelso Harlequins Sevens today, and we’ve won this.” Melrose are the current holders of the Kings of the Sevens title. And, while there are still nine tournaments to play in the series, they are already being tipped as favourites to retain their crown.

With players like South African Sevens cap Austin Lockington and new Edinburgh signing Damien Hoyland, they will be a difficult side to beat.

Bursting open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate their victory at the Gala Sevens, Melrose winger Callum Anderson said: “These boys are class, and they’ve just got that little bit of magic, and the rest of us just pull together. Richard Mill as well just works tirelessly in the middle.

“It’s been quite a big week training so it’s always nice to come out and perform.” And, looking ahead to this weekend’s event, Anderson added: “I love it (Melrose Sevens), I just get so excited. Training this week, seeing the stands going up, I just can’t wait.” A crowd of more than 10,000 is expected to converge on Melrose for the Sevens - which this year are included in the Scottish Government’s Homecoming Scotland celebrations.

A total of 24 teams from all around the world will compete for the Ladies Cup, won by Saracens last year.

As well as Borders clubs, guest teams include Clermont Auvergne, last year’s runners-up and Glasgow Warriors, whose head coach Gregor Townsend was part of the Gala team which defeated the hosts to win the tournament in 1994.

Townsend has already stated that his side could include new signing Carlin Isles, from America, who is regarded as the fastest man in rugby.

Melrose Sevens Convener, Ian Cooper, said: “With ClermontAuvergne eager to improve their position of 2013, together with USA Tigers and Glasgow Warriors I feel that any one of a dozen sides is capable of winning the tournament. Add to that the unknown quantity of Trinidad and Tobago and I believe we can look forward to yet another outstanding afternoon of top quality sevens rugby.” The Melrose Sevens has this year adopted a Tartan fancy dress theme and confirmed Children 1st as its charity partner.

The weekend’s entertainment kicks-off with a Vets tournament at the Annay Road pitches on Friday, April 11, at 11:30am. It culminates in Plate, Bowl and Cup finals with The Islay Star defending The Davidson Chalmers Cup for the second consecutive year.

Local Councillor David Parker, Leader of Scottish Borders Council, said: “In this fantastic year for Scottish Sport, it is tremendous that the Melrose 7s will once again kick off a brilliant sporting calendar. Melrose RFC work tirelessly to put together a fantastic 7s programme and their event is a great day for all the family and enjoyed by a great many Borderers and by those from out with our region. Scottish Borders Council is pleased to play a small part in the Melrose 7s and I have no doubt that the event will be a tremendous success.” The full draw was made as follows - First Round: Ayr v Stirling or Jed-Forest; Glasgow Warriors v Currie or Stew Mel; SMT Trinbago v Dundee or Boroughmuir; USA Tigers v Heriot’s or Langholm; Gala v Hawick or Howe of Fife; Melrose v Aberdeen or Selkirk; Watsonians v Kelso or Edinburgh Accies; and Clermont v Glasgow Hawks or Peebles.
