And, having already won the RBS Premiership this season and with a Border League final still to look forward to, Melrose Sevens convener Ian Cooper revealed there was a “real feel good factor” surrounding the club ahead of trips to Hawick and Berwick this weekend.

It followed the success of the Wasps who won the Kelso Quins 7s the day after defeating Jed Thistle in a play-off to win the Borders Semi-Junior League.

Melrose Ladies are also in line for some silverware after they were drawn against Murrayfield Wanderers in the final of the Sarah Beaney Cup, to be played at Broadwood Stadium, Cumbernauld, on Saturday, April 19 - RBS Cup finals day - kick-off 3.30pm.

Cooper, pictured above, said: “The club has been having a good year and there is a real feel good factor in the club. The team are playing exceptionally good rugby and off the field everything works like clockwork too.” Melrose included Scotland Sevens star Mark Robertson in their squad at the weekend. And he revealed he was honoured to get the opportunity to once again play for his hometown club - despite losing 22-5 to Edinburgh Accies at the semi-final stage.

Robertson said: “I’ve not been involved (in Melrose Sevens) for four or five years so I really, really enjoyed getting three run outs. For the whole town it’s a massive occasion, it was a real privilege to get a chance to play in it again. I’m just disappointed we couldn’t go the whole way and reach the final.” With eight tournaments still to play in the Kings of the Sevens series, Melrose, who were missing the injured Graeme Dodds last weekend and are set to wave goodbye to fellow Sevens stars Bruce Colvine and Grant Runciman, aren’t expecting an easy ride.

Speaking following his side’s 26-5 defeat to Melrose in the first round proper on Saturday, Selkirk captain Fraser Harkness said: “There’s a lot of Sevens to go now and we have a point to prove.

“The Sevens is always big for Selkirk, we always want to compete. Melrose are clinical when they’ve got the ball but in that first half we kept the ball, they did nothing, absolutely nothing. They scored one try off a turnover, we just needed to be stronger at the breakdown.” But he added: “They’re not 26 points better than us. We can put teams like that away, we just need to believe in ourselves a bit more.” Hawick Sevens kicks off at Mansfield Park on Saturday at 2pm, with the Berwick Sevens following on Sunday at 1pm.
