The Scotland 7s flyer will make his 17th appearance on the HSBC Sevens World Series as the 2014/15 campaign begins in Australia.

However, this is the first time he will compete in the Gold Coast 7s.

He said: "This is a leg of the Series I have never played in so it's a new experience for me and one I'm excited about.” The squad, which features seven Borders players, have now been in Australia for a week, with the initial part of their stay focussed around jet-lag management, before returning to full training.

Jones continued: "The first few days were spent getting over jet-lag and regulating our sleep and mixing that in with some light activity, such as handling drills on the beach and a swim in the sea.

"Our strategy starts two days before we leave Scotland by waking up really early and adjusting our caffeine intake. The challenge once we arrive is to stay up long enough that we don't wake up through the night.

"Once everyone adjusted we were back into training. Early in the week we had two quality gym sessions each morning and we rounded off a series of rugby sessions with a hit-out against New Zealand on Tuesday.

"That was a positive exercise as it allowed us to put the structures we have been working on into place in a realistic game environment.

"We played two periods of seven minutes and one of ten. We felt our defence put them under pressure and we utilised the space well in attack, scoring four tries. We had a strong finish that showed our fitness throughout the squad. It has also given us specifics to focus on ahead of the weekend.” Scotland 7s will begin the new campaign against Fiji at 3.02am, our time, on Saturday then they face hosts Australia at 6.45am before finishing the pool with a tie against Portugal at 9.39am.

"We're up against some good teams. Fiji are consistently one of the best sevens countries in the world and always pose a challenge. Australia are the home team. We played them on several occasions last season and results were roughly even.

"Finally Portugal have a consistent squad of players with a lot of experience who can challenge any team at their best. They will also lift their game from recent Rugby Europe competitions.
