The two clubs meet in BT National League One at Riverside Park on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

It will be the first time Harkness has faced his former club since he left Philiphaugh in the summer.

But, with Selkirk currently leading the league having started the season unbeaten, the Scotland Sevens cap admitted they haven’t missed him.

Looking forward to the Borders derby, Harkness told the Border Telegraph: “It will be a strange day for me, it’s not every day you get to play against your best mates.

“I came here (to Jed) to help out with the young boys and get my foot on the coaching ladder and I really enjoy it.

“Selkirk haven’t missed me to be honest. From what I hear they have been playing some great rugby. I’ve been speaking to boys who have said they (Selkirk) are dominant up front; it feels strange saying that because the 11 years I was there we were never dominant up front.” But he added: “If we play like we played (against Peebles) we’ll not be far away.” Jed lost 17-26 to Peebles last weekend. However, they were unlucky not to snatch a losing bonus point - despite playing most of the match a man down after Graham Robson received a red card.

Harkness said: “I think we had a hand in each one of their tries. But we finished the game with two 18-year-olds at props and they didn’t look out of place in senior rugby.

“We’re young but we fronted up (against Peebles) and I’m gutted to got nothing out of it. We actually thought we maybe should have done a bit better.

“We picked up a few injuries. But we’ll have to dust ourselves down, we’ve got Selkirk next.” While Jed welcome Selkirk to Riverside Park, elsewhere in BT National League One, Peebles are at home to Watsonians and Kelso, who sacked Head Coach Jammy McFarlane following a disappointing run of results, make the trip to Marr with former Melrose stars Gary Holburn and Andrew Skeen at the helm.

In a statement, the Poynder Park club said: “Following the departure of our Coaches on Saturday, Gary Holburn will take over as head coach assisted by Andrew Skeen as player/backs coach.” And it added: “Neil Hinnigan will continue as Director of Rugby/Manager.” In the BT Premiership, champions Melrose travel to Edinburgh to tackle Accies, Hawick are at home to Currie and Gala line-up against Ayr at Netherdale hoping to make it third time lucky after two defeats in as many weeks to Melrose and Heriot’s - all games kick-off at 3pm, except Melrose who kick-off at 2pm.

Gala Head Coach George Graham said: “It’s always tough to take when you get beat, however I’ve no gripes about the score (against Heriot’s). I think we were lucky to get away with 30 points. I thought Heriot’s were very impressive.

“We knew this three week period was going to be tough - Melrose, Heriot’s and then Ayr - so we’ve obviously got a lot of work to do. But you don’t become a bad team overnight.

“The boys are hurting because they are letting each other down but we just need to make sure that we regroup and I’m sure we’ll come good.”
