Club President, Mick Craig, proclaimed his delight at Selkirk being presented with the accolade.

He said: "All involved here, at Philiphaugh, are really chuffed to have received this award, as it adds to what has already been a successful season for us.

"There's a lot of people we owe this to – the players and coaches for a momentous year on the park, and the background staff for all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.” Selkirk's first XV currently epitomise the club's ambition and desire to achieve, having won all 13 of their BT National League Division 1 matches to date, three of which were in November.

Currently sitting perched at the top of the table on 60 league points, 15 ahead of their closest rivals GHA, the Philiphaugh side won two league games away to Jed-Forest (29-10) and Peebles (18-3) and one at home to Kelso (18-12), last month.

Craig continued: "The performance of our senior side has been fantastic, if not a bit of a surprise.

"We lost over 20 players from our senior squad last year and we looked to the younger boys and second XV to make the step-up. They have well and truly exceeded our expectations.

"It's testament to our coaches that this team have come together and gelled so well, to produce the goods out on the pitch.” Selkirk also run two successful reserve sides, 'A' and The Stormers, who compete in BT Reserve League National 2 and BT Reserve League East 2, respectively.

Selkirk A, who currently sit in fourth place in their league, recorded two wins from three games in November, as they put Edinburgh sides Currie 2XV ( 22-17) and Stewart's Melville FP 2XV (10-7) to the sword.

The club's third XV, Selkirk Stormers, won their sole league game last month, defeating Dalkeith 2XV, 28-0.

Selkirk maintain a strong link with the local high school and Selkirk Youth Club, who run the town's under-18 side, to ensure that the best home-grown talent is coming through the system and into the senior ranks.

Craig said: "As a club we sustain our long-standing relationship with the school sides through Graham Marshall, who is senior management at the high school and one of our 'A' team coaches, and development officer Keiran Cooney.

"They work endlessly to reap the best out of our young, local lads, and on maintaining a smooth transition for players from youth to senior rugby.” Recognising the need for players to be physically, as well as mentally, prepared, to develop in the game, Selkirk have a strong focus on their strength and conditioning work.

"We have Malcolm MacDougall on board, who holds gym sessions for the younger boys on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Craig added.

"We keep investing in the conditioning facility we have at Philiphaugh, and recently brought in some new equipment from money we raised from club fundraisers.” Selkirk also run an extremely successful mini rugby section, Selkirk Rhinos, which attracts between 80 to 100 boys and girls most weekends.

The Border club are utilising the fantastic facilities they have available to position themselves at the crux of the community.

"We pride ourselves, absolutely, on being a community hub for Selkirk, and use the clubhouse we have at our disposal to host a range of events to generate income,” Craig continued.

"The clubhouse is rented out through the day for anything from business meetings to weddings. We also host classes, such as Zumba, a number of times a week.” Doug Ward CBE, BT National League Division 1 representative on the Scottish Rugby Union Council, who was on hand to present the award, said: "The Selkirk club encapsulates the community spirit of their town and the surrounding area.

"On the playing side of things, they have invested time and effort in their youth and are, deservedly, reaping the rewards.

"It goes to show that giving youngsters an opportunity can be of real benefit.” As part of their prize, Selkirk receive a 12-month BT Sport subscription and £200 cash.

They will also win a table for 10 at the Scottish Rugby Club Awards Dinner on Friday 29 May 2015 and will be on the shortlist for the BT Club of the Year award, to be announced at the dinner.
