MELROSE defeated Kelso in a very entertaining final of the Lofty tournament at Netherdale on Saturday.

Ten teams took part, Kelso defeating Gala and Melrose winning against Peebles in the semi finals of the Cup, while Hawick edged out Selkirk and Berwick were winners against Duns in the semi finals of the bowl competition.

the Bowl final was first up and Berwick were just too strong for the Hawick team so they are the Bowl champions for 2015.

The main final followed with both teams showing some great skills and determination. And, in a very keenly contested game, Melrose scored three tries to Kelso’s nil - closer than the scoreline suggests.

Ian. G. Millar, Gala Rugby Youth Development Officer, said: “Well done to all teams who took part, considering the cold and damp conditions some great running rugby was played.

“Thanks again to Gala Rugby Club, Gala Star, the Mini Maroons and the Loughton family for their continuing support in what was the 10th playing for the Lofty Cup.

“A special thanks to the referees who did a great job and to Euan Wilson of the Mini Maroons for his assistance in coordinating the tournament along with myself.

“Looking forward to next year already.”
