Late collapse puts Selkirk in trouble

SELKIRK"S sabbatical in the top flight of non-league football appears to be over.

The Yarrow Park side"s fourth game in a week took its toll on the leg weary squad.

And a late collapse led to former champions Edinburgh City scoring four goals in the final quarter-of-an-hour - almost certainly relegating Selkirk to the First Division.

It all started well for Fraser Lothian"s team as Craig Lothian, who was returning from a three-match ban, latched onto a poor backpass to tuck the ball beyond Duncan Monteith after only 11 minutes.

But City always looked dangerous with Stuart Anderson and Craig Tyson making important clearances.

And on quarter-of-an-hour keeper Lenny Clark made a great save to prevent Robbie Ross from finding the net.

Selkirk went two up on 32 minutes when a Craig Livingstone"s header was palmed into the path of Andy Sczezniak and the on-loan Pole slammed the ball home from close range.

The two-nil halftime lead gave the Souters a glimmer of survival hope, but tiredness began to creep into the legs of about half-a-dozen home players who were playing their fourth game in eight days.

Ross pulled a goal back with a powerful header on 53 minutes.

Only two minutes later Selkirk"s Keith Darling was through on goal but Monteith saved well top prevent the winger extending the lead.

City equalized on 75 minutes in controversial circumstances. A penalty was awarded after Gary Lothian challenged Kevin Morrison in the box and Ross tucked away the spot kick.

Ross notched up his hat-trick two minutes later with a well-taken solo effort.

And with six minutes remaining the in-form striker scored his fourth from the penalty spot after being upended by Stuart Anderson.

The downfall was completed in the final minute when Ross Guthrie nodded Jean Ferreira"s cross over the line.
