Towering centre-forward Máté Mészáros is set to arrive at Yarrow Park this week.

And despite his 20 years he’s already experienced Europa League football back home in his native Hungary with Paks.

Mészáros arrived in Scotland for a trial with Hibs at the start of the year, and has most recently been playing as a trialist with Charlton Reserves in London.

But he has now accepted an offer from Selkirk’s management team of Stevie Forrest and Paul Doig to see out the season in the Lowland League.

Forrest told us: “His trial with Hibs fell through and he just arrived one day at Meadowbank where we were doing a coaching camp.

“You could see from his first three or four touches that he was a player and we quickly learned he has a fantastic pedigree. This boy lined up against Hearts in Europe not that long ago.” Forrest has already attracted four up-and-coming French players to Selkirk this season.

And he believes this continental approach will bring dividends for his team.

Forrest added: “We want to bring a better quality of player to the club and if that means they come from France, Hungary or wherever so be it. The French boys are excellent players and Máté will be every bit as good.

“He is over six foot tall and a real athlete. If we get clearance this week he’ll be a Selkirk player by the weekend.”
