Braw Lads' Gathering gets underway
GALASHIELS geared up for its annual gala week - with a family bike ride.
The Braw Lads' Gathering revealed it added the new event to its programme to celebrate its links with Melrose.
The programme for the Braw Lads' Gathering 2012 is as follows - Wednesday, June 20: Family Bike Ride. Leaves Currie Road at 6.30pm and travels along the Black Path to Tweedbank, returning to Gala at 8pm.
Friday, June 22: Country Dance, Volunteer Hall, Galashiels, from 7.30pm to 11pm. Tickets available by calling 01896 752316.
Saturday, June 23: Schoolchildren's Discos, Volunteer Hall, Galashiels. Three discos split into age groups for primary school children. Braw Lads' Ball, Galashiels Academy, 6.30pm for 7pm start.
Sunday, June 24: Kirkin' of Braw Lad, Caddonfoot Church, 9.45am. Braw Lads' Sports at Netherdale, various events such as schoolchildren's races, potted sports, touch rugby, football fives, and musical entertainment. First event at 10.30am.
Monday, June 25: Lindean Ride out. Ride out leaves Currie Road long stay car park in Galashiels at 6pm. And a service will be held at Auld Kirk Lindean at 7.45pm. It will be followed by the Riders Social in Quins restaurant in Galashiels around 10pm.
Wednesday, June 27: Ceremonial ride to Torwoodlee leaves Currie Road at 6pm, arriving back in the town centre at 8.15pm. Fancy dress parade at Scott Park at 6.45pm. Parade, from Scott Park to Bank Street, at 7.30pm. Carnival dance, Volunteer Hall, Galashiels, from 10pm.
Thursday, June 28: Overseas Civic Reception, Volunteer Hall, Galashiels. Invitation only. For more information contact Clerk to the Gathering, Hazel Newlands, on 01896 750669.
Friday, June 29: Investiture Concert. The Braw Lad and Braw Lass are invested with their official sashes at the Volunteer Hall from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
Saturday, June 30: Braw Lads Day - Morning ceremonial ride: 8am, Braw Lad receives Burgh Flag from the President of the Braw Lads' Gathering at the Burgh Chambers; 8.40am, Raid Stane Ceremony; 9am, Fording Tweed at Galafoot; 9.15am, Visit to Abbotsford; 9.45am, Fording Tweed at Boleside; 10am, Gallop over Gala Hill; 10.30am, Old Town Cross Ceremony; 11am, Visit to Old Gala House; 11.30am, Cavalcade leaves Scott Park and goes up Scott St, Gala Park, Kirk Brae, Hall St, Island St, High St, Channel St, Market St; 12noon, Dipping of flag at War Memorial.
7.50pm, March of Principals and Ex Principals from Bank St to the War Memorial. 8pm, Roses Ceremony - Braw Lass accompanied by Braw Lad and Attendants lay the roses used in the ceremony at the Old Town Cross on the War Memorial.
