Follow in the footsteps of a Roman general around Jedburgh
NEARLY two thousand years ago the Roman General Agricola and his soldiers walked along the Dere Street road. You can follow this route in the newly reworked Paths Around Jedburgh booklet.
The soldiers marched to areas that are now known as Towford, Cappuck, below Peniel Heugh, along Lilliardsedge and through St Boswells.
Today it is still possible to follow in their footsteps and see the line of the old road which is waymarked with a Roman helmet symbol. You will pass Roman quarries along the way and explore the old Roman Camps at Pennimuir, while enjoying excellent views of the Borders countryside as you go.
The booklet of 11 routes explores the countryside around the town including Lanton Woods, the Jed Riverside path and Totches Baulk - part of the old layout of the settlement.
There are routes for all including the horse-riding route Jedburgh Circular, easy access paths at Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre and the ever popular St Cuthbert's Way.
With colour photographs, maps and route descriptions, the publication is available at £2 from the Jedburgh Visit Scotland Information Centre, please call 01835 863170 for more information. The paths around towns booklets are available to download at www.scotborders.gov.uk/walking
