A RETIRED Borders teacher is set to launch his first book.

Colin Russell taught at various schools throughout the Borders during a distinguished career.

And he went on to chair the International Congress of Educational Leadership Societies.

While education has been his passion the Scottish enlightenment has been his folly.

And since his retirement the 66-year-old has extensively researched Scotland’s cultural awakening.

Dr Russell’s book, Princes of the Scottish Enlightenment 1688-1832, explores the sweeping changes that shaped the nation we know today.

Colin told us: “The Scottish enlightenment was the rise of culture over creed.

“The enlightenment in Scotland was much broader than other parts of Europe because almost everyone here was literate.

“There are a thousand arguments to when the enlightenment started in Scotland but I believe I’ve argued my case well.” The former Open University lecturer will be joined by friends to provide a presentation based on his book with musical and dramatic accompaniment.

There will also be a quiz and a supper provided.

And Dr Russell will be on hand to sign any bought copies on either of the evenings.

The first launch night will take place at the Gordon Arms in the Yarrow Valley on Saturday, November 22 from 7pm to 8.30pm.

A similar evening is planned for the George and Abbotsford Hotel in Melrose on Friday, December 5, also from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Colin added: “We want to make these entertaining evenings.”
