'THE Beat’ never stops at Galashiels Amateur Operatic Society rehearsals at the moment, as they prepare to wow Gala audiences during the first week in March with this year’s production of 'Hairspray’ – a modern musical set in the 1960’s which has something for everyone.

It is a fun, fast, lively show from start to finish with numbers like 'You Can’t Stop the Beat’; 'Welcome to the 60’s’; 'Big, Blonde and Beautiful’; 'I Can Hear The Bells’ and many more made popular by both film and stage versions of the show. Hairspray (both the movie featuring John Travolta and the stage show) has been a huge hit with today’s youngsters, but will also appeal to those who were the teenagers of the 1960’s.

The costumes, the hairstyles, the music, the dialogue will all rekindle memories of life growing up in the freer, fun loving 60’s.

The show, however, has a more serious message and will also remind the audience of life in 1960’s America – set in 1962, in the early days of the emerging Civil Rights movement, it is a reminder of a time of segregation and racial prejudice and the fight for equality which was just beginning.

Jeff Thomson is once again at the helm, directing the production, and as always brings his expertise, flare and seemingly endless enthusiasm to the Volunteer Hall stage. Jeff is assisted by Marie McCullough who returns after a year’s absence to choreograph the show and has introduced some spectacular dance routines.

Together their talents have produced a show which is not to be missed.

Some newer faces in the cast will be joined by faces more familiar to regular Gala Opera goers, although not necessarily in familiar roles. Look out for Ivor Lumsden and Alaistar Waddell in the roles of 'Edna’ and 'Wilbur’ – both seasoned performers well known to Gala audiences but in roles that will show them in a completely different light. They support a younger cast, headed by Kayley Henderson and Clark Eaton Turner as 'Tracy’ and 'Link’ – together, this blend of youth and experience results in a show which will appeal to all.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see it. Tickets (£13 Adults/£10 Concessions) are available to members of the public at its annual Coffee Morning in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels on Saturday, February 14, and thereafter, from Monday, February 23, onwards, also in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels.

This is one not to be missed!
