THE brothers behind Selkirk supergroup Frightened Rabbit have smashed a fundraising target to help their baby niece.

Scott and Grant Hutchison have appealed to their fans across the world to donate towards research into a cure for a rare illness which has struck down nine-month-old Morven.

The toddler from West Linton has been diagnosed as suffering from Cystinosis - a condition which affects only 15 people in Scotland.

There is no known cure for the illness, which can prevent body cells from functioning properly, and reduces the expected life expectancy to little further than reaching adulthood.

Our sister paper, the Peeblesshire News, revealed how Morven's father Neil - who is the eldest Hutchison brother - is embarking on a race against time to find a cure.

Neil said: "We had never even heard of the condition, but the doctors who gave us the news were excellent in explaining it to us. But when we got home, we were quickly on to the internet to try and find out more.

"When I learned about the research, I wanted to put all my weight behind helping this. If there is an opportunity to find a cure we have to do all we can to try and make it possible."

Neil will be joined by three friends Duncan Farrar, Dan Norbury and Charlie Tulip to tackle the Berlin Marathon this weekend. And they had already raised around £2500 towards their £5000 target before Frightened Rabbit backed the campaign.

The band, who have three albums under their belt, regularly sell out venues across the UK and America with almost 90,000 fans following them on Facebook. After an appeal this week on their page - along with a link to our story - the fundraising total reached almost £6000.

Scott Hutchison said: "If anyone has a spare minute or some spare cash, please sponsor our brother to run the marathon and raise money for our beautiful niece."
