LITTLE Tian Tian Brunton can bear-ly believe it as she meets her cuddly namesake - one of Edinburgh Zoo's giant pandas.

The seven-year-old came face to face with the creature - which arrived from China last month with male Yang Guang - after offering to keep her company by speaking Chinese.

Tian Tian, of Peebles - whose mum is from China - wrote to the panda via zoo bosses about the things she shares in common with the eight-year-old animal.

She said: "We have the same name. This has made me quite famous at school as everyone has heard about you."

She added: "Not many people here in Scotland can speak Chinese but some are learning. We can have a chat because I can speak Chinese."

Zoo boss Hugh Roberts said Tian Tian's note was "enchanting". He added: "We were only too happy to arrange for her to meet our panda of the same name."
