IT was only formed a year ago. And includes players from across the region.

But, last weekend, the Scottish Borders Pipe Band - a collaboration between Hawick and Stow Pipe Bands - were crowned Scottish champions for the second year in a row.

It won the 3b category at the Scottish Pipe Band Championships in Dumbarton on Saturday.

It was the first time the band had competed in that category having been promoted a grading following its success last year when they won all before them - including the 4a category in the world championships in Glasgow in August.

Pipe Major Stuart Robinson told the Border Telegraph: "I think it is fair to say everyone was shocked at how well we had done. We never envisaged going out on our first outing (in category 4a) and winning."

And piper Stuart Wilson, from Galashiels, added: "It's the equivalent of Gala Rugby Club winning the Scottish Cup."

The pipe band played a five minute medley and competed against 23 other bands from across Scotland to win the title.

To view their performance, log on to our page on Facebook. The band is next due to perform at the British Championships in Annan on Saturday, June 30 - Braw Lads' day.
