FORMER Housemartins and Beautiful South star Paul Heaton stopped off in the Borders for a breather during a marathon cycling tour - and then revealed he thinks the region is "simply ace".

The chart-topper turned pub landlord, who had a string of hits throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including number one track "A Little Time", performed a sold-out show in front of an audience of 200 at the Clovenfords Hotel near Galashiels on Saturday.

He organised the trip to promote local bars and celebrate his 50th birthday.

Speaking on his Facebook page, Paul said: "After yesterday's gruelling 82 miles through the beautiful Border hills, today was supposed to be easier. And Clovenfords Arms and Clovenfords folk you were simply ace!"
