BOWHILL House and Country Estate is preparing to throw open its doors for the 2012 season - but this time with a special surprise in store. Along with unveiling a brand new Sir Walter Scott exhibition, The Duke of Buccleuch will be unlocking some of the beautiful rooms in Bowhill which have been closed to the public for more than 30 years.

Furthermore, for the first time in a generation, Bowhill House, in the Scottish Borders, will be opening three months earlier, with visitors able to access the house and grounds over the Easter school holiday fortnight (31 March - 15 April) and on weekends and bank holidays in April, May and June. Bowhill will continue to welcome visitors daily throughout July and August.

Helen Currie, House Manager at Bowhill, said: "The estate has an exciting year ahead. Bowhill has always offered visitors a wealth of art, history and holiday adventure, but in 2012 the public will be able to access rooms which have been off-limits for decades.

"These include Bowhill's Walter Scott room which now holds an exhibition dedicated to the man himself. The room lets visitors explore the links between Sir Walter Scott and the Buccleuch ancestors as well as looking at the detail of his life. You will be able to see Scott's very own pipe, quaich, desk seal and ink stand surrounded by artwork of the period such as pieces by Sir Henry Raeburn and Wilkie. The Bowhill library will also be open, giving visitors an insight into the personal family space of the Duke of Buccleuch and his family.

"We're delighted that these treasures will be open to the public and, for the first time in a very long time, look forward to welcoming visitors from spring."

Bowhill House is set within the beautiful Scottish Borders countryside and offers outdoor enthusiasts the perfect playground. Whether exploring the many way marked walks, the tree trail or the adventure playground itself, the Bowhill Ranger will be on hand to ensure you make the most of your visit.

House tours will take place throughout the spring and summer months including Bowhill's Easter Fun Day on 8 April. For more information on opening and special events visit www.bowhill.org.uk.
