THE sun shone, the sheep bleated, the jam set and the horses jumped - who could ask for more.

The 94th Yarrow Show proved that the traditions of the rural Borders are alive and as popular as ever on Saturday.

Thousands flocked to the Carterhaugh show-ring like they’ve been doing on and off since 1906.

And farmers, breeders, growers and cooks all earned their place on the latest roll of honour.

Sheep entries were very strong with Billy Renwick of Blackhouse coming out top with the champion Blackfaced Sheep and indeed following on with the Overall Champion Sheep in the Show. Other section winners were Norman Douglas, Catslackburn (Cheviots), Alan Cowens, Philiphaugh Old Mill Farm (North Country Cheviots), Chapelhill Farm, Peebles (Park Sheep), Ewan Pate, Craigsford Mains, Earlston (Prime Lambs), and A McClymont, Kirkstead (Blue- faced Leicesters).

The Overall Championship in the Preserves, Baking and Industrial section was once again won by Jane Telfer from Broadmeadows Farm. Jane is a master of the culinary arts.

The horse section this year was very well subscribed with Melissa McTaggart on Sir William John winning the Overall Horse Championship. Working Hunter Champion was Charlotte Bunting on Baillie Boo whilst Clive Storey on Masquerade claimed the Overall Coloured Horse Champion.

Providing the main ring entertainment were Selkirk Flute Band, Melrose Pipe Band, magicians and Punch and Judy.

On top of all the trophy winners there was a special presentation for secretary Anne Turnbull to recognise her 21st year as Show Secretary.

She was presented with a beautiful Love Seat from all her friends on the Committee of the Yarrow and Ettrick Show. Anne, who is retiring this year, has worked tirelessly for the show over the past years and was thanked for all her work by Alec Telfer.

But Mrs Turnbull was for passing the praise baton to others following Saturday’s Show. She told us: “Carterhaugh was a wonderful setting for the 94th Annual Show and grateful thanks must go to the Duke of Buccleuch and in particular to the Bowhill Farm Manager, Mr Sion Williams for allowing us to use the Weatherhouse Field and for all his help. “The biggest thanks of all must go to Alec Telfer, the show yard Convener, who works tirelessly throughout the week prior to the show to make sure that all is in place for the big day.” The trophies were gracefully presented by Alison Brown, wife of this year’s President, Derek Brown. Alison was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers by Anna Williams, daughter of Vice President, Sion Williams.
