A SINGER songwriter from the Borders is vying for the Christmas number one spot after recording a cover of one of the world's best known songs in a student flat - using a double wardrobe as a sound booth.

Craig Jeffrey, from Galashiels, joined Edinburgh Celtic Rock band The Simple Touch to record their own unique version of Scots anthem Auld Lang Syne on a friends PC.

They filmed the video to the single on a city rooftop. And they are hoping to reach new heights by launching an internet campaign in a bid to make it a global hit. It is already understood to be attracting interest from radio stations across the country.

Last year, X Factor winner Joe McElderry missed out on the festive top spot when he was beaten by Rage Against The Machine following a high-profile internet campaign.

The single will be officially launched by Celtic Music Radio in Glasgow next month. Promoter Bill Jeffrey said: "The facebook campaign has just started and seems to be growing rapidly. There is also a growing interest from radio stations in the USA, Canada and Australia."

And he added: "This single just might be this year's Rage Against The Machine."
