SHANKS David (Selkirk) Peacefully at Western General Hospital, David, very much loved father and grandpa. Service at Borders Crematorium, Melrose at 3pm on Thursday 9th June. All friends, former colleagues and pupils are welcome.

I have only just heard this. Mr Shanks taught me between 1978 and 1984 and instilled an enduring love of Latin in me. Only yesterday, attending a delayed graduation at St Andrews, I invoked his memory in muttering about a poor pronunciation. He was a lovely teacher. One of the best.
