THERE’S no need to ask the youngsters in Langlee who they’re shouting for at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

During an evening of everything Scottish at the Community Centre, around 20 Primary 6 and 7 pupils voiced their support for the home nation.

Highland dancers, an accordion player, a local singer-songwriter and a hearty dinner of pies, stovies, tablet and bannock made sure everyone was in the mood.

The Langlee Youth Club project was organised by the children. And the youth workers on hand gave it a huge Scottish thumbs up.

Kerry Scott told us: “The children were asked which country of the Commonwealth they would like to use for the theme and the overwhelming majority wanted Scotland.

“The aim of the project was to bring together the sports and celebrations surrounding the Commonwealth Games.

“We wanted everyone to sample traditional Scottish fayre and remind them what Scotland has to offer.” Accordionist Lynne Kemp provided plenty toe-tapping tunes before the dancers from the Graham School of Highland Dancers took to the floor for a few demonstrations.

Butcher Lindsay Grieve didn’t bring of his award-winning haggis, but he did serve up a delicious buffet of pies and stovies. Buttered Selkirk Bannock and home-made tablet were all washed down with a toast of Irn Bru. Many of the youngsters had their faces painted while others sported Scotland scarves and flags. Youth worker Carol Foreman said: “I think everyone is into the spirit of the Commonwealth Games.

“It has been a fun night where the children have had a taste of Scotland.” Teenager Rebecca McCue headlined the evening with several songs.

Last week’s Commonwealth Games celebration will be followed in August by the return of Langlee Youth Club.

The sessions at the Community Centre will include sports, cooking, arts and crafts as well as themed evenings.

Mrs Foreman added: “There is a need for the youth club to start again and we hope to provide a fun environment.” The new Langlee Youth Club, which is open to any pupils in Primary 7 and S1, will run on Tuesdays between 6pm and 8pm from August 26.
