GALASHIELS Community Council could shortly be hitting the airwaves on local radio.

At Wednesday's meeting Reverend Bob King of TD1 proposed the idea to host a talk show on the station.

And there was a positive response from members.

Mr King told the meeting: "We have got some really high-tech equipment at our studio at Galashiels Golf Course and have recently got our FM licence, which took a lot of hard work.

"Now we broadcast past Borders General Hospital, over to Selkirk and across to Melrose. It covers about four-and-a-half miles in all and we commit to being live 10 hours a day.

"We play a wide range of music, but I would ideally like to see more local things.

"The community council could come on and say 'this is what we are dong in Gala'. A classic example would be to look at the police report and get someone in to talk us through it.

"There are not too many places that have a community radio station, because it costs around £6,000-£8,000 just to run."

The community council donated £100 to the station to help with their costs.

Chairwoman Judith Cleghorn said: "I think the idea of having the community council broadcast on TD1 is a great idea.

"We have a number of sub-groups that could do something."
