THE showers failed to dampen the spirits of those who turned up to the Biggar Show last weekend, as families from across the region attended the annual agricultural event.

Organisers expressed their delight at the strong turnout on July 22, despite the dreary conditions.

Callum Wight, president of the Biggar Show 2017 said: “We were delighted with the attendance and in the past we would have faired far worse on a day with the conditions we had on Saturday.

“All the hard work the Biggar Farmers Club has put in to the showfield to make sure our site doesn’t cut up on a wet day is paying off.

“There is always somewhere for the public that support us to get under cover out of the rain.”

Sir John Campbell from Glenrath Farms chose the Texel Ewe from Robert Laird, Cambwell, as the overall champion animal in the showfield.

The ewe had earlier in the year been placed first in her class and reserve champion Texel at the Highland Show.

Mr Wight added: “We had 350 people in to watch the speed shear take place during early evening and 850 people attended the disco at night.

“On behalf of the team at Biggar Farmers Club, we would like to thank everyone who supports our show by bringing trade stands, sponsorship, livestock entries and the general public, for it is their attendance that makes our day.”

The show kicked off shortly after 8.30am and began with the judging of the horses, followed by ponies, then the Texel and Beltex sheep.

There was something for everyone throughout the day, with a range of children’s entertainment, show jumping and the highly anticipated dog show.

The lights went out on this year’s show by 2.30am on Sunday morning and the field was dismantled and cleared by 4pm.
