YOUNGSTERS have been flying the flag for Fairtrade in Melrose over the past fortnight.
And on Thursday an audience packed into the Ormiston Institute to hear from a group of Earlston High pupils, who delivered a presentation on ethically sourced products.
The team spoke about how Fairtrade featured in their curriculum and how they could do more to create a Fairtrade school. Among the visitors was local MP John Lamont.
He said: “It’s encouraging and inspiring to see the enthusiasm these young people have for promoting the Fairtrade message.
“I was really impressed by the enthusiasm and knowledge of Fairtrade demonstrated by the Earlston High pupils.”
And on Sunday, customers at the town’s Co-op store were also served up a treat – with a table-top sale of cakes and sweets made with Fairtrade ingredients.
The event was held by Melrose and Galashiels scouts Matthew Cove and Dougray Seggie.
The pair will be among a group of seven scouts from the Borders who will be joining the 180-strong Scottish contingent heading off to a USA camp next summer.
Meanwhile, back in Melrose, the Fairtrade Town group’s Fairtrade annual Cafe event, cancelled this year because of snow, has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 7.
