SELKIRK proved to be the dark horses at the Berwick Sevens on Sunday at Scremerston, but even they could not live with the front-runners of the Kings of the Sevens contest, Watsonians.

The Myreside men kept on course to retain their title by adding the Berwick title to wins at Peebles, Melrose and Hawick.

The holders defeated Selkirk 22-7 in the final to stretch their lead in the Kings series, leading the table at the halfway stage with 43 points, ahead of Melrose (27) and Gala (20).

“ The boys are keen and want to go on and win as many tournaments as possible,"said coach Andrew Ker.

Andrew Skeen, a key player in the side, who stays in Berwick, added: “It is good to get a win after such a tough shift yesterday. We have a big squad, and every time we have an injury, someone else steps in.

“Selkirk have had a decent tournament and are a good side, but in the end, we had a little bit more”.

It is thought that this is the first time that Watsonians have won two tournaments over one weekend, and they remain favourites to hold on to their crown with the Langholm Sevens next weekend.

Watsonians had the control and experience to see off the Selkirk challenge after scoring 119 points in their earlier ties.

They fell behind to a Clinton Wagman try, converted by Darren Clapperton, after Mike Fedo had put Watsonians ahead.

But two scores from Ewan Fox and one by Ewan Millar sealed the contest, Ali Harris adding one conversion.

Earlier, Watsonians had ease through with wins over Gala and Jed-Forest in the pools’ format before defeating Melrose in the semi-final.

But Selkirk, after crushing Edinburgh Accies, beat Earlston before just holding on to defeat Peebles.
