RESIDENTS have hit out at plans to build six new homes in Cleland Avenue, Peebles.

Earlier this year, Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) announced plans to build the two-bedroom flats, for elderly residents, in place of garages on Glensax Road.

But at last week’s meeting of Peebles Community Council meeting, locals slammed the plans over a lack of vehicular access.

One said: “The flats will be built for elderly residents, and access will be narrow for any ambulances, fire engines, carers and blue badge holders to get down the road, and park outside.

“We have no objection to housing, just the layout of the site.”

Community councillor Les Turnbull said: “We discussed the plans at a previous meeting and, on behalf of the community council, I objected to the houses in their current form.

“I have raised the same concerns as the residents, and I hope that SBHA will take those concerns onboard.”

Two representatives from SBHA were at last week’s meeting to hear feedback on the proposed development.

One said: “Since our press release was issued in June, we have spoken to the planners about access to the development, and our plans show that vehicle access to the site will be from Glensax Avenue.

“We have had several meetings with planning officers and have adjusted plans accordingly.

“Several alternative plans for the site layout have also been drawn up.

“However, any plans for the alternative should be driven by the planners.”
