EVENT promoter Kevin Green admits he's in for a torrid time next weekend as he welcomes a football legend to Galashiels.

The businessman has been organising major events in his hometown for the past four or five years.

And he has brought some of the biggest names in sport to the Volunteer Hall.

On Sunday, September 2, though, the die-hard Celtic fan will roll out the red carpet for Rangers hero Paul Gascoigne - and they will have to watch the Old Firm match together.

Kevin told us: "When I booked Paul the Celtic-Rangers game was scheduled to be on the Saturday but it's now been moved to the Sunday - and I'm going to be in a hall watching game with dozens of Rangers fans and one of their greatest ever players.

"Paul was a thorn in the side of Celtic fans for years but none of us can deny what a fantastic footballer he was - his goals are still talked about to this day.

"I chatted with Paul when I booked him to come to Galashiels and his stories are hilarious."

Gascoigne was widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world during the mid 1990s.

The entertaining midfielder won 57 caps for England during a glittering career that took him from Newcastle and Spurs to Lazio and Everton.

But, for many, his most prolific time was wearing the blue of Rangers - helping Walter Smith's team win the double during the 1995-96 season.

As well as scoring 30 goals in 74 appearances for the Ibrox side, he became a firm fans' favourite with his on- and off-the-field antics.

And, despite problems with alcohol and mental health since his retirement from football, Gascoigne remains one of the most sought-after speakers connected to the game.

On Sunday, he will be supported on stage by professional snooker player and present-day commentator Willie Thorne as well as hilarious after-dinner speaker Scott Glynn.

Kevin added: "Both Willie Thorne and Scott Glynn are tremendous speakers and this promises to be a great afternoon of laughs and stories.

"I don't think it matters what football team you support - everyone wants to hear Paul Gascoigne's stories."

Sunday's Old Firm game will be screened in the Volunteer Hall on a big screen from noon.

And straight after the final whistle the live entertainment will begin.

Platinum and VIP tickets for the event are already sold out, but a limited number of standard tickets are still available by phoning 07958642751.

The event is over 18s only.
