AN attack on a 47-year-old man outside a Borders rugby ground by a group of youths has caused widespread anger.

And a video of the brutal assault has gone viral after being shared on several anti-violence social media sites.

The attack took place outside Kelso's Poynder Park at around 8.15pm on Saturday.

It is alleged that the victim had asked a group of up to 20 teenagers to move away from his car before being knocked to the ground.

Since the video was first posted online it has been viewed more than 250,000 times - and attracted widespread condemnation.

Police are appealing for anyone who has information relating to the attack to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesses following an assault at the Kelso Rugby Club.

"A 47-year-old man was attacked by a group of youths outside the ground and was taken to Borders General Hospital before later being released.

"Inquiries to identify those responsible are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately, quoting incident number 4585 of August 25."
