THE future of rugby is bright.

A total of 450 children took to the field at the Gytes last Sunday for the Peebles Piranhas annual rugby tournament.

Teams from as far north as Stewart’s Melville in Edinburgh, to Moffat in Dumfries enjoyed playing against sides from across the Borders.

The tournament also provided a first test of the New Law Variations being piloted by Scottish Rugby across all age groups.

George Blair, Peebles Rugby Youth Development Officer told us: “The simple sight of 450 girls and boys running about with a ball in hand and smiles on their faces was a joy to see.

"We’re fortunate to have an excellent group of coaches who create an inclusive rugby experience."

With just over 140 children now involved in junior rugby in Peebles, the Piranhas club continues to go from strength to strength supported by a team of coaches, many of whom are former players.

Sunday's tournament was also supported by several local businesses including Wood Oven Wonders, Forsyths of Peebles and Sainsbury’s.

Traquair House also kindly donated their marquee.

Mark Thomson, Peebles Piranhas convener, said: “Apart from the children on the pitch, the stars of the show are the volunteers who make it happen.

"Whether it’s home baking, three round trips to Costco, refereeing, delivering first aid, packing lunch bags for players, marking out pitches, barbecuing 600 burgers or selling refreshments, it’s a big team effort.”
