WINDS of up to 80mph are set to batter the Scottish Borders on Wednesday, with an amber weather warning issued by the Met Office.

Storm Ali is expected to bring a very windy spell of weather with gusts of 65-75 mph inland across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England between 8am and 5pm tomorrow (Wednesday, September 19).

The forecast for Wednesday was not part of Storm Helene, which was set to hit the UK on Tuesday. A weather warning for Storm Helene was cancelled after the storm dissipated before it reached the shore.

On Wednesday, residents are being warned to expect flying debris, which could lead to injuries and be a danger to life.

The storm is likely to bring some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs or damage through falling trees and branches breaking.

Longer journey times are likely on the roads, with the windy weather expected to bring closures to certain roads and bridges.

Disruption is also expected to a number of air, bus, ferry and rail services.

The Met Office has also warned that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

And large waves could affect coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
