EMERGENCY services sealed off a Galashiels street on Thursday evening following reports of gas smells.

Residents on Tweed Crescent were evacuated from their properties.

Two fire crews from the nearby Galashiels station attended the incident just after 7.30pm with police cordoning off the area.

Inspections of gas supplies were carried while a resident who had taken unwell was treated by paramedics.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We received reports of a potent smell coming from a two-storey property.

"Two fire crews were mobilised and six residents were evacuated."

It is believed that the odours were caused by an industrial-strength cleaning product being used within one of the properties.

And the streets were re-opened just before 10.30pm.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We attended an incident in Tweed Crescent to provide support to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service."
