A MEMORIAL bench has been unveiled in Galashiels to honour the men from the town who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War.

As the centenary of the end of the 1914-18 conflict quickly approaches special commemorations are being planned across the country.

In Galashiels a programme of Remembrance has been organised to honour the 639 servicemen who never came home, as well as the brave sons of the town who did return.

Ahead of the ceremonies, concerts and lectures the Ladies Section of the Royal British Legion Galashiels Branch unveiled their Memorial Bench on Saturday.

Jane Doogan from the Ladies Section told us: "We wanted to do something special this year to commemorate the men of Galashiels who gave their lives during the Great War.

"We also wanted the bench to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War."

The distinctive black bench has been sensitively placed in the shadow of the town's War Memorial at the Lower Fountain.

The bench was designed and manufactured by local company Morrison & Murray.

Jane added: "The bench is somewhere people can sit and reflect."
