AHEAD Of this year's centenary of Armistice a special Remembrance Concert is being staged in Galashiels.

Musicians, singers and poets will take to the Volunteer Hall stage to pay tribute to the sacrifice made by so many in the four years of war up to 1918.

The show is part of the Gala Remembers 2018 project which aims to highlight the town's war effort.

And to create a respectful commemoration for all the 639 sons of Galashiels who didn't come home.

Gordon Keddie is the organiser of the concert.

He said: “I discussed this idea with Energise Galashiels Trust and we agreed it was important to hold this event on the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War to give a proper tribute to the 639 men from Galashiels who lost their lives during the conflict.”

Among those to perform on the evening are Galashiels Ex-Service Pipe Band and the Town Band.

Langlee Community Choir, One Acchord Choir, Alastair Waddell and Lorraine Kemp will also take to the stage.

And there will be poetry by Galashiels Academy pupil Sophie MacDonald.

Bill White, Chair of Gala Remembers 2018 added: “Music halls were hugely popular during World War I and it is fitting we will have our own concert as part of Gala Remembers 2018.

“There is some great local talent set to perform on and we would encourage Borderers and visitors from further afield to come along to support them on this poignant and important weekend.”

The concert will take place on Friday, November 9 from 7.30pm.

Tickets for the show, priced at £12 and include a souvenir programme, are on sale daily between 1pm and 3pm from the British Legion Club in Park Street, Galashiels.
