TWO green-fingered Borders groups have had their hard work recognized and been awarded with It’s Your Neighbourhood certificates.
Lauder Primary School Gardening Club was presented with an ‘Outstanding’ award by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful at last Wednesday’s ceremony whilst Whitsome Enhancement Group received a ‘Thriving’ award.
The event aims to recognise the efforts of local groups from across the country in improving their neighbourhood by cleaning up green spaces, forming planting partnerships and engaging the community in their activities.
Parent volunteers at Lauder Primary School run a weekly gardening club where children learn about growing their own fruit and vegetables including sowing seeds, harvesting produce and then cooking and eating what they’ve grown.
Whitsome Enhancement Group work in their community to maintain floral displays throughout the village in spring, summer and autumn as well as growing vegetables and plants in the Loaning. The group is also responsible for holding an annual plant sale and erecting Christmas lights along the Main Street for the village.
Dr Lindsay Montgomery, Chairman, Board of Charity Trustees, at Keep Scotland Beautiful said: “I would like to congratulate all of the 2018 It’s Your Neighbourhood groups. Their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment has helped to deliver significant local environmental improvements across the country.
“Local environmental quality standards across Scotland continue to decline at an alarming rate. Local action from volunteers across Scotland, such as those involved in It’s Your Neighbourhood, goes a long way in helping to address this problem.
“Every single community group recognised at these awards has played a vital role in helping to create more vibrant communities Scotland-wide. They have made a significant difference to neighbourhoods the length and breadth of the country, and for that I would like to offer my congratulations.”
