A MAJOR search operation was mounted last night after a teenager failed to return from a late-night walk.

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue were alerted by Police Scotland just after 2am.

And they were joined in the search around Newcastleton by volunteers from Moffat Mountain Rescue.

A dog team from SARDA was also joined the operation.

And teams from south of the border were put on standby in case the search area had to be widened.

Following an extensive search of the area the young person was found by police officers on a minor road near the village at 6am.

A spokesman for Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue said: "They were located by a police officer who had been involved in the search but who had been retasked and was travelling to another incident.

"The missing person had taken a wrong turning in the forest."
