SCHOOL pupils in Melrose created their very own poppy factory during the run up to Sunday's centenary commemorations of Armistice.

Deborah Wood, head of art at St Mary's, devised the plan to mark the anniversary of World war One ending.

And the 770 poppies which have come off the pupil production line have raised almost £2,000 for Poppy Scotland.

Production began in September with pupils from pre-school Kindergarten all the way through to Form 8 rolling up their sleeves and learning to wet felt.

Each of the felt poppies was then finished off by volunteer embroiderers and stitchers.

The sale of the poppies has so far raised £1,918 for the veterans' charity.

Deborah told us: "The target we set has now been successfully reached, thanks to the generosity and hard work of the whole school, parents and wider St Mary's community.

"The 770 poppy works of art are now worn proudly by everyone who bought one."

A garland of the felt poppies, each attached to the name a local soldier who died during the 1914-1918 conflict, has also been attached to an oak tree in the school grounds.
