TRIBUTES have been paid to former Kelso Laddie Ian Whellans who died in a tragic accident at the weekend.

The 26-year-old was one of the most popular figures on the local festival circuit.

The 2016 Kelso Laddie was found dead at a farm near Hume yesterday (Sunday) morning.

A spokesman for Police Scotland told us: “At around 10.15am on November 11 police in the Scottish Borders were called to reports of a male who had died at a farm in Hume in Kelso.

“Officers attended and found a man aged 26 had died as a result of a farming accident.

“Investigations are continuing into the circumstances of the accident.”

Hundreds of friends and fellow festival principals took to social media throughout yesterday to pay their respects.

Kelso Rugby Club plan to hold a minute's silence at their next game.

The club's online tribute read: "Ian was a true gentleman and his passing has left a real numbness all around our great town today."

A spokesman for Kelso Civic Week added: "Ian was a well-respected and much liked young gentleman who was a credit to both the Association and the town during his time as Kelso Laddie.

"He will be sadly missed by many, both near and far."
