GALASHIELS remembered the fallen on Sunday with one of the largest parades and ceremonies in recent memory.

Representatives from almost all of the town's Churches and organisations joined veterans to take part in the Royal British Legion Scotland Remembrance Parade around the town.

And hundreds of locals crowded around the War Memorial to witness a moving and poignant ceremony.

While the fallen from all conflicts are rightly remembered, this year's centenary of the end of World War I added extra significance.

And further tributes were paid to the 639 soldiers from Galashiels who never came home in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday.

Gala Remembers 2018 was led by community organisation Energise Galashiels.

Mike Gray, chair of Energise Galashiels Trust, told us: “Gala Remembers 2018 was a fantastic project which helped bring the town together and highlighted the importance of community engagement at the start of a major regeneration scheme of the town where partnership working is key.”

The ambitious programme of events included exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, live music, light displays, street art and other acts of remembrance held in the town in October and November.

The community-led initiative, which was supported by a number of other organisations including Scottish Borders Council, also provided educational opportunities and entertainment.

Events included a World War I season at Pavilion Cinema and a themed afternoon tea and dance.

The Festival of Remembrance Concert on Friday evening was hailed as an outstanding success.

And a WWI cabaret afternoon was every bit as thought-provoking and enjoyable.

Bill White, chair of the Gala Remembers 2018 partnership, added: “The aim of Gala Remembers 2018 was also to create a legacy to continue this project in the future, and alongside the various other projects being taken forward, it has the potential to help transform the town in the coming years.”

Sunday's centenary anniversary of Armistice began with lone piper John Brown playing the lament Battle's O'er - as did over 1,000 fellow pipers at Memorials across the Commonwealth and beyond.

To conclude the Remembrance commemorations in Galashiels, a special Angel's Wings Ceremony was held.

Special lighting on the Figure of Peace creates an Angel's Wings effect from the shadows.

It was organised by the Angel's Wings Committee, which is chaired by local councillor Sandy Aitchison.
