EARLSTON fell silent on Sunday as locals gathered at the War Memorial in an Act of Remembrance, marking 100 years since the end of World War One.

The day’s events began with a Service of Remembrance in the church followed by a parade to the town’s War Memorial where a short service was conducted by the Rev Julie Rennick.

Alex Scott played the pipes and the Standard Bearer was George Goodfellow.

Laying wreaths at the memorial were Robert Bell on behalf of the Royal British Legion, Vanna Barlow for the Women’s Section Royal British Legion Scotland, Natasha Shewan on behalf of the Armed Services, Kevin Drum for the Borders Regional Council and Sheila Gibb on behalf of the Earlston Community Council with Norman Catto acting as flag bearer.

Also laying wreaths were Tom Burnham on behalf of Earlston Parish Church, Eddie Lynch for Lodge Ercildoune 1119, Callum Watson and Ninian Grant on behalf of Earlston High School, Katie Taylor and Shaun Gaffney for Earlston Primary School and Matthew Cove, Rhuriah McIntyre and Caitlin Allan on behalf of the Scouts and Cubs Group with Benjamin Cove and Thomas Sinclair acting as flag bearers.

The First World War saw 49 men from the Earlston area lost their lives in battle - the names of whom are on the town’s War Memorial along with seven who were killed during the Second World War.
