THROUGHOUT last weekend the fallen from Manor Valley and neighbouring parishes were remembered at a special exhibition within the Parish Church.

Iain Haldane not only researched all of the World War soldiers from the parishes of Lyne, Manor and Meggat who never came home.

And he sympathetically included each of their stories as well as photographs to be displayed.

Each of the 25 men's names was also read out during a commemoration service within the Church.

Around one in three of the young men from the rural parish who enlisted never came home - and the dead from Manor Valley alone included four pairs of brothers.

And Iain discovered that the youngest to be killed was only 15 years old - John Walker from Glack Farm.

He also found that Private Robert Melrose was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.

Iain said: "The sources of information I used in compiling the list were the invaluable Tweeddale Book of Remembrance written by Dr Gunn, local Rolls of Honour, Scotland's People website, the Scottish National War Memorial Roll of Honour, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and from people with local knowledge.

"Lyne and Meggat were linked at the time of WW1 and the minister travelled by bicycle from Lyne to Meggat for services.

"Presumably he used the Manor road to Manorhead and then used the path from there to Meggat."

Iain's research also discovered that the son of the Lyne and Meggat Church Minister, Moses Taggart, was killed in action.

Second Lieutenant Henry Taggart was only 19 years old - a commemorative plaque in his honour is located in Lyne Church.

The research also revealed Colour Sergeant Alexander Scougall of the Royal Marines, who was born in the Black Dwarf's Cottage at Woodhouse Farm, had fought in conflicts across the world including the Boer War.

Retired from the army and working in Shanghai when war broke out, he immediately re-enlisted and was killed at Gallipoli.
