THE community of Melrose turned out in force to mark the local postmaster’s retirement.

John Collins has served the town for the last 29 years.

And members of the public gathered in the Ormiston Institute recently for a farewell reception.

The town’s community council also took John and his wife Sandra for a meal before the gathering to celebrate.

Chairman William Windram said: “John and his wife Sandra said they were touched by the support and turnout at the event.

“John also gave us a print of the opening of the post office, which we may donate to the historical association.”

Mr Collins was due to retire last November, but after plans to relocate the store to the Abbey Mill in Annay Road were scrapped, he said he would stay on until a replacement was found.

As previously reported, the post office is now operating from the Mason’s of Melrose bookstore.

Mr and Mrs Collins said they were leaving the town to be nearer their family in Falkirk.
