POLICE in Galashiels are stepping up their patrols over the festive period.

Officers received 458 calls from around the town last month.

And local PC James Harrison said efforts were being made to bring that number down: “Over Christmas many crimes tend to be alcohol-related so we have been promoting responsible drinking.

“We are also stepping up foot patrols in the town to clamp down on antisocial behaviour.

“On Saturday we will have extra officers on the streets dedicated to the operation. Carrying out the patrols will be their full focus.

“As well as the extra patrols this month, we have also been advising people on winter driving and the dangers of speeding.

“The road policing teams will also be out and about around the town over the Christmas period targetting dangerous driving.”
