Borderers will soon be able to enjoy the much-hyped Greggs vegan sausage roll.

The latest product aimed at catering to non-meat eaters was launched to much fanfare last week.

But locals were left disappointed when they were unable to get their hands on it.

Greggs describe the roll as being "designed to mirror some of the sausage roll’s classic features including 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry but instead we wrap it around our own bespoke Quorn filling".

The launch on January 3 saw just 900 stores, only around half of all Greggs stores, stock the roll.

None of the Borders branches carried the product with the nearest stores being in Edinburgh.

But now Greggs have announced that they are working on getting the vegan alternative into all their stores.

A spokesperson said: "Vegan sausage rolls have sold out well ahead of our expectations in those shops selected for launch.

"We are currently doing all we can to increase supply to these shops as a priority.

"When we have satisfied demand in these shops we will roll out vegan sausage rolls to the remainder of our shops where we know customers have been asking for it.

"We are doing this as quickly as possible."

Last week's launch followed consumer demand for more vegan options, including a petition by PETA last year, which was signed by more than 20,000 people.
