SUPERMARKET giant Lidl is hoping to make an announcement soon on bringing a new store to the Borders.

Yesterday the Border Telegraph revealed the German discount chain was eyeing up a move to Galashiels.

Last month an application was submitted to Scottish Borders Council to allow the sale of food goods at units currently occupied by Carpetright and Currys at Comley Bank Mill Retail Park.

And Nectar Asset Management, which put in the plans, said there was interest from Lidl to take over one of the buildings in December.

Now supermarket bosses have confirmed they have a number of options on the table.

A spokesperson for Lidl said: "We are in the process of exploring various options to bring another new Lidl to the Scottish Borders and look forward to sharing any firm plans with the community when a site has been identified."

The chain currently has two stores in the Borders, in Kelso and in Hawick.
