DRIVERS are being warned that Galafoot Bridge is to be completely closed during night-times for the next fortnight.

From Thursday, February 14, the A6091 bridge between Galashiels and Melrose will shut to all traffic from 9pm to 6am.

The current single-lane operation will continue during day-time hours.

A spokesman for roads contractors Amey told us: "These night closures are to allow for the hydro-demolition of concrete on the structure.

"Sound reduction measures will be in place to minimise noise from the site, but due to the nature of the work, some noise disruption is still likely.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

"Unfortunately, this work cannot be carried out under day working as it requires the use of the full carriageway, to ensure the safety of road workers and the travelling public."

The official westbound diversion will be via the A68, A699 and A7 although Lowood Bridge will remain open.

And eastbound traffic, as is the case during the day, will continue to be diverted along the B6360 by Abbotsford.
