A PORTRAIT of Galashiels' second provost will at last be displayed in the Burgh Chambers.

William Laidlaw served the town from 1873 until 1875.

But his picture has never been hung on the walls of the town hall.

However, community leaders have now managed to track down a portrait.

At last Wednesday's meeting of Galashiels Community Council, Johnny Gray told members: "We have finally managed to get a portrait of William Laidlaw, the second provost to Gala.

"We met with a family member who has given us the picture as he has never had his portrait hung up in the Burgh Chambers.

"He was made provost in 1873 and resigned in 1875 as he was surrounded by a rather disjointed council.

"We want to ask the community council for £60-£70 so we can get the portrait framed.

"We think it is only right that we have a place for him in the Burgh Chambers."

Members of the community council agreed to grant the money.
