A FORMER Borders MP has been appointed independent chairman of Borders Citizens Advice Consortium.

Calum Kerr, who represented the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk constituency for the SNP from 2015 to 2017, has described his new role as “a real honour”.

“At a time when austerity continues to have a detrimental impact on many families and people in the Borders, it’s a privilege to be involved with an organisation that does vital work supporting those that need help in our communities.”

Prior to being elected, Mr Kerr served as a voluntary director of Citizens Advice Direct.

Lucy O’ Leary, chairwoman of Central Borders Citizens Advice Bureau said: “We are absolutely delighted with Calum’s appointment.

“As an MP, Calum was very supportive of our organisation and has an acute understanding of the many issues affecting people and families living in the Borders and we look forward to working with him.”
