FLEEING the war-torn corners of the planet provides the background for a scintillating children's stage show that's coming to the Borders this spring.

Jabuti Theatre, who have been working with refugees at workshops across Scotland, are bringing their new visual theatre show for children aged seven and over to both St Boswells and Peebles as part of a nationwide tour.

Paper Memories, in conjunction with Platform and Vision Mechanics, deals with issues of migration, identity, and the power of memories.

The captivating production, which combines puppetry, dance, aerial, and storytelling, is a story about identity and migration, told through the eyes of refugee Tali who comes to settle in Scotland.

At first, she tries to suppress her roots, but soon realises that it's these roots, these memories, that will keep her and her family strong.

Told to embrace her new life at the expense of her old one, Tali watches her family try to refuse their past - until her family realise that actually, it’s their memories that make them stronger, and that will keep them together in the long run.

Jabuti Theatre artistic director Rachael Macintyre’s background is in puppetry, visual theatre, installations, and politically engaged art for children and young people.

Co-creator Mariem Omari is an activist, playwright, performer, and co-artistic director of Bijli, company in residence at the National Theatre of Scotland with Umar Ahmed.

Her background is in working with some of the most vulnerable people in North Africa and the Middle East, and promoting the voices of marginalised communities.

Paper Memories begins a comprehensive tour of Scotland on March 29 and runs through to April 20, including some special performances for schools.

Paper Memories is performed at St Boswells Village Hall on the afternoon of Sunday, March 31 and then again at the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles on Friday, April 19.

Tickets for the St Boswells performance are available from eventbrite.co.uk and the Peebles tickets are available from the Eastgate Theatre box office.
