A PEEBLES mum is calling for a ban on fireworks after an unexpected display last weekend left her baby son and dogs traumatised.

Anjie Frost said she and her son could have been killed had her two pets dragged her into traffic as they bolted in panic.

The display by Peebles Hydro Hotel early Saturday evening caught Anjie off guard and she feels more should have been done to warn the public. And she believes all other firework displays, apart from the town’s annual event in November, should be banned.

She told the Peeblesshire News: “I take part in the local sales/recycle page on Facebook and one day a week I trek about the town picking and dropping stuff off.

"Out of nowhere there was a massive fireworks display. My son was in his pram and screaming at this point. One of my dogs, Marvin, was on his lead but took off and headed for the nearest car which he managed to get under. Given his size, he was wedged underneath. My other dog Hank tried to bolt the opposite way but I had a firm grip of his leash.

“In pure panic and terror he set about the lamppost mauling it. I tried to comfort my son, Aaron, control Hank and then pull Marvin out from under the car.”

Anjie said the whole experience was horrific. “Once the display stopped it took 20 minutes for Marvin to come out from under the car. He was so scared and could barely walk.

"His back end kept dropping, he was panting, salivating and staggering about. I had to drag him home, meanwhile Hank was stuck to my heels and hiding behind my legs.”

Having called the hotel to complain, she said: “I’m told: ‘I’m, so sorry you had this experience. We did inform our immediate neighbours'.

“What good is that when the whole town can see and hear them? If I had been given warning there is no way I’d have had my dogs and son out in the first place. It is common decency to inform the community.

“We could have been killed, had the dogs dragged us onto the back road at night, no driver would have seen us.”

When the Peeblesshire News contacted the Hydro Hotel for comment, we were told that all required permissions and permits were obtained for the fireworks display.

The spokesperson added: “I suggest if there is an issue this would be better picked up with the licensing as a council matter. The hotel complied with all the requirements set out by Scottish Borders Council.”
