ST RONAN’S Silver Band is hoping to bag a cash boost to help buy new uniforms.

The group has been shortlisted for cash from the Tesco Bags of Help community funding initiative.

But it's up to shoppers to decide where the money goes.

And members at St Ronan's are calling on Peeblesshire to get behind them so they can raise £20,000 to replace their concert jackets and outdoor engagement uniforms – which date back to 1999.

The money would also be used to help kit out the younger members in the Future Band.

Band secretary Keith Belleville told us: "We are delighted to have been selected as one of the Bags of Help groups during March and April this year.

"Our new uniform appeal is an ambitious project to kit the whole band organisation out and all 60 members will benefit, as well the public who listen to and watch the band at our many engagements across the year.

"We hope that customers in the Peebles Tesco Store will cast their votes to help us achieve this goal."

Grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 are offered as part of the Tesco scheme.

The cash is raised through carrier bag sales and customers can choose which projects should be rewarded, buy casting their vote using a blue token which is given at the checkout each time they shop.

The Bags of Help project has already delivered over £63 million to more than 20,000 projects across Britain.

Tony McElroy from Tesco, said: "Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers.

"It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community.

"There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities."

Customers will be able to vote for the band at the Peebles store between March 1 and April 30 at the Peebles store.
